Hello from Guelph

I recently discovered the pitcher plant I have is native! I'm very glad it's a perennial because I'm running out of plant space indoors :p I'm going to make a container bog to keep it outside and get some native sundews/colour variations of purpurea to join it. Is it too late to buy seeds now (and winter stratify indoors), and expect them to survive the winter?

Sarracenia purpurea var. purpurea would qualify as native and could survive outside with the right conditions. Cold stratification (or GA3) should reliably lead to germination if the seed is viable. Sarrs can be grown without dormancy indefinitely, although outside is better, other things considered. The bigger the plant, the more likely to survive outdoor dormancy. Most people wait till year 2-3 to take the chance.

Welcome! I live nearby (Waterloo) and grow S. purpurea in a couple resin barrel planters outside. I sink the pot into the ground for the winter and cover with leaves and they do great! I've thrown seeds in the pot and had them germinate, but the squirrels often get to them, so it's better to grow indoors until they're larger, like Lloyd recommended.
