Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say, but I find it beautiful. I was looking for one and found one in the wood. They are rare and I was lucky to find it in perfect blooming condition. I took a few photos and video and left it undisturbed. They are difficult to keep alive as they live in symbiose with a microscopic fungi. The seed won't germinate if the perfect conditions are not met. They can take 10 years to bloom! As you can see, life sphagnum is abundant there, it carpet the forest in most place.

I hope it will have a long life...

Cypripedium acaule! It’s one of the more common species around Ontario and Quebec. They’re possible to grow but very picky, they need an extremely high ph and the perfect amount of water.

Just a side note, although I have seen this species growing in a Sphagnum bog, that isn’t Sphagnum moss, it’s just a forest species of moss.

ok here it's very rare. I have seen it only 2 times. I would not try to take it and grow it because it does have a high risk of dying. How can they grow in high PH in this type of environment? I thought such forest bed was more acidic, funny thing :)

You are right, it is not the same sphagnum that grow in bogs, not sure what it is called but it really look similar to sphagnum and it grow the same way as sphagnum. Do you know what it's called?

You are correct! I meant to type very low ph!!! They hate alkaline soil (unlike their yellow cousins) and low acid, sorry about that!

@Carson you think there is some Sphagnum mixed in? I don’t know my eastern mosses but I would think this environment would be too dry for Sphagnum to thrive. @daniella3d do you have more pics of the moss???

There was sphagnum in there for sure, and it is not dry, it is constantly soaked with fog and condensation. It looks like sphagnum can live on a forest bed not only a bog.

Look at that, there totally is! Carson was correct that it was half and half (I’m not surprised ).

There are definitely species of Sphagnum that can live in forested areas, they’re usually different from the bog species but who knows in this case. Are there any bogs close by? Sounds like a good habitat for more cool species.

It was really in the forest, no bog that I could see around it but it was in the lower part of the forest. When walking on this, it feel like a very thick carpet, like it's a foot or more deep. There are little creek going through the forest, but there was none when this was located. It was like 8 feet from the dirt road.

That’s extremely cool! Sounds like a really awesome spot to find cool plants, probably more jems hiding around. Thanks again for posting!

Some Sphagnum mosses live in wetter environments that others. They can translocate water horizontally as well as vertically, bringing their water source with them, so to speak.
