Cut and pasted from Australian Carnivorous Plant Society Journal June 2026
Presentation – Nepenthes Cuttings (Oliver Evans) Oliver shared practical advice on propagating Nepenthes, including:
• Always sterilise cutting tools (heat or rubbing alcohol).
• Use coco coir/peat with fine perlite for moisture retention.
• Leave 1–2 leaves on each node; cuttings without leaves were unsuccessful.
• Cutting leaves in half is optional—useful mainly when space is limited.
• Leave pitchers on if possible; they help maintain hydration.
• Cut stems on an angle to encourage root development.
• Large species (e.g., N. truncata, N. veitchii) are prone to rot; rooting hormones showed no significant benefit.
• Best time for cuttings: early spring growth flush (late September).
• Oliver grows cuttings in 75% humidity, under lights, with heat mats in winter.
