Willy's DIY LED Grow Lights

The fixture Willy made me would be perfect for you.

The new electronic ballasts should last at least 5 years.

Sounds it it! 1 Ballast didn't even last a year, they're so finicky in general too. I'd love to have something that I can just plug in and forget without having to fiddle with replacing bulbs.

LEDs last a long time (they are rated at 50,000 hours+), if you don't abuse them such as forcing water onto the unit, trapping them in an enclosed area where heat builds up, or letting a lot of dust building up on the unit.
We can definitely work out a thin LED config (maybe 1"-2") that works for you. Just PM me when you are interested starting the project! :)
PS: the build for Lloyd is on page 3.

That looks like it'd be perfect! I'll need to get an estimate so I can set some money aside for them. I'd like to have something no wider than a T5 fixture but maybe an extra half inch longer so I can connect them to hooks/pully systems better. My T5's ended up being exactly the size of the shelves making it difficult to raise them up all the way due to the tension of the chains going inwards if that makes sense. If they came out just a little more on the sides I could put them a little higher. This is as high as I can get this particular light.

Could you measure the maximum length of "no wider than a T5 fixture" and maximum width? I can order parts for building 2ft, or 4 ft fixtures.
And no problem with the hooking position, I can design something that works for you.
Cheers :)

The gap in between my bookcases where the lights fit through is 12cm which is exactly the width of the lights including the reflector. I'm using 3 4ft fixtures currently & could fit a couple extra inches on either side for hooks.

The best thing about them is the decreased heat production. As I run out of T5HO bulbs, I'm going to replace all my fixtures.

Willy, Veyseys catalogue has retrofit LED for T5HO fixtures:

2 feet 12 W $65.95
3 feet 18 W $81.95
4 feet 24 W $99.95

Up to 30,000 hours.

How would you compare these to your LED builds?

I assume you meant these LEDs?
They don't come with power cord, so you will need a T5 fixture to begin with. There is price difference, and for mine, I can customize the design to fit someone's need.
There's no right or wrong - if you like commercial products, by all mean go with LEDs on the market! :)

The recent pricing of WilLED is listed below.
Modular design, +$5 for power cord:
2ft 10w - $25
4ft 20w - $40
4ft 32w - $50

Round design, +$5 for power cord:
14w - $25

Full metal fixture including power cord (ex. Steve's)
4ft 40w, - $100

Active cooling lights
Discontinued, for now; available upon request

I see you're using 3D printed brackets for your lights now. I've been working on designing some for my garage lights. Definitely handy to have a printer around for these sorts of projects!

I got my lights today & I'm shocked by how light and thin they are, they're just what I needed! These shelves sit next to my computer desk, & being as short as I am I got used to being blinded by my fluorescents. Somehow even though these are slightly brighter than my old ones, they're softer on the eye which is a bonus! The 3D printed hangers also worked perfectly, I was able to get the top lights within about an inch of the next shelf which means I'm only losing about 2 inches of growing space vrs 5+ which my Orchids will appreciate . I've been sitting here looking at all the colours that I didn't realize I was missing before with the white lights. Thank you for making these Willy, & the extra seeds were a nice surprise. :D
