Ray's Patio-Bogs

Hey Everyone! I though I would be uploading a lot more spring pictures, but there wasn't much to share.
So new thread it was. Just today I finished the re-bogging of a few container in preparation for summer.
As my red container required 2L of water every few days if it was hot outside, while my bogs were perfectly fine.
Anyways, Now I only have bogs (on the patio) and no inside plants it makes sense that I need to upload the changes.
I used to have a red container that I filled with various plants from WillyCKH and cpgeek, now thats all gone!

Here is the nicest photo of it before (forgot to take a photo before transplant)

and here it is now!

But this thread is not only about this new bog, its all about all my other ones (though this is the nicest)

This one got some random burying insects in the soil, so the end purp and red leaved one got affected

Im pretty behind this year, just like alot of you guys. only things left is to remove some of my taller species for purps :p
Next year Im going to reearrange some plants to make it look as nice as my newest one.
Each bog has a gravel layer on the bottom with some plastic garbage acting as a filter before the soil. The two new bogs the first one and the last one with the container in the bog have a peat perlite soil, while the other two are pure peat with sphagnum moss around each plants root system.

Some gravel can be mineral rich (the orange stuff in my case). You might try testing with a TDS meter.

Yup exactly! one brand I tried did do that to me making the water TDS at 120ppm, the one Im using now makes it 50ppm and after a few month and constant flushing its a little lower.

The orange gravel was even worse. Who knew? Now I use the 1 cm. clay balls covered with a layer of mineral fibre cubes to keep the peat out.

I also failed all my pollination attempts (I think I did). I didn't have a paint brush on hand so I tried with q tips. Doesn't look too good. The flava one is already gone cause no other plant flowered in time. Man last time I did try pollination it went so well with a brush.

Also my mistake I think the ppm was actually 220 not 120 when I was using regular gravel, anyways its still not good either way so I had to switch.

Hi Ray,
Whats with the pipe I see in the soil? Are the containers purchased for bogs or a bit of diy?
These look great!

Hey Ryan
The pipe is perferated so that the water level could be seen. The containers are plastic half barrel. And yes they were purchased from Canadian tire. Thanks for the compliment

Since I'm in Alberta I ask my family to send pictures of the bogs, its looking good! Hopefully I get alot of flowers next year. My drosera hybrida decided to flower like it was dying I guess. :)

what's the purp on the right side.
Sarracenia purpurea venosa Montana that I grew from a seedling given to me. Pretty fast grower and divides very nicely! I love purps and to be honest bog are so easy since the heat wave badly scratch them with the amount of water in it.

also I'd like to buy this one..
I got a small division that I took of this one (purpurea tattnell Co) that If it grows up a little we can sort something out. I also got mine from carnivorous plant store. that's probably going to be till next year spring though :p I was also eyeing the same Montana you want too, lets see who can snipe that one up :D it's in the picture of my newest bog in the first post just beginning to grow.
