Outside growing

I have a tuck under, so it never freezes, especially with the aquarium chiller running in there. But I did switch off the outside air vent I use to keep it cool for my dormant plants. Good luck, Lloyd!

Here in Winnipeg, it start to be chilly :

In my garage (poorly insulated and unheated) it's -15°C...
When my plants will be old enough to pass the winter there, I'll have to do someting about it.
especially in January / February, expect -40 ° for short periods.

For now, my adult Pings are fully dormant inside a box in the garage.

I hope everything will be fine this winter.

What kind of heating do you use ? Not too costy ?

I have an outdoor electric space heater. I use an external thermostat so it's only on when it goes below 32°F and shuts off when it hits 32°F again. It's mainly on at night when the electricity is very cheap. Because the garage is attached, the heater rarely is on. I don't notice the difference on my Hydro bill.

Temperatures dipped to -22 degrees without windchill being factored in. The previous record low was -18.9 set 57 years ago in 1960.

Cold for us Southern people in Toronto.

Bonjour Remmy - Merci! Your weather makes me feel better about the forecast here. Your nonchalance about the temperatures also helps explain how the Acadians and Québécois could have been convinced to move from temperate France to much cooler climes. ;)

Fortunately here we only have to deal with -30 to -35C for nighttime lows, and rarely ever see -40 (it is of historical note when that happens). So far we've only seen -26, but there is enough winter to come that I fear that night will not be our coldest. Good luck to you and your plants this winter!

@Lloyd I sympathize with you for the -22 ° C., it stings.
if you are able to keep your garage to a "out of frost" temperature, that's awesome!
That attached garage probably help.

@Apoplast Yes if you come to Canada, you know what to expect haha

At the moment we are not freezing in Manitoba.
There is even ice forming inside the house on the windows.
And me who thought to be able to make an outside peat bog...

Wow! Now that is chilly! We aren't that cold. My outside thermometer (wireless signal sent into me in the comfort of my house) says -25C. Still, we have the same ice layer inside on the windowsills. More of the same for tomorrow, but I grab a flight back home to California, which will be a nice break for the weather in addition to being good to see my family. Good luck up there, Remy!
