Hi Guys
me again, as i getting older now days finding that my memory is not so good any more ! age or some thing else well ??
So when on a week long trip with Richard Nunn ,Phill Mann and Allen Lowrie , looking at a lot of cp's round Albany and sterling ranges etc and me and Allen discussing what the best meat pies to eat and Pill telling to stop being silly , we go on to the subject of cephalotus flowers and how they work .
the art of ceph pollination i have in depth posted on this forum , but not how to hybridism them ,this is not hard but extremely fiddly , need good eyes and a steady hand ,that i no longer have
, any of ., your tools are very small stainless steal spring scissors , fine pointed tweezers , a magnified head set so you have 2 free hands , and good light , now as discussed in previous post the anthers do produce yellow pollen, for a very short time ,collection of this is very important and difficult to do , the pollen can be stored in waxed baking paper as pollen only or the pollen buds and stored in the paper folded and in a air tight container and put in the fridge not to get frozen at round 2 to 4 c is right , once you have your pollen or the flower you can harvest pollen from to pollinate a ceph you want to cross with , first you must cut off all the anthers on the flower /flowers that your going to make the cross with leaving the receptor anther free, this is where its become very fiddly and you need the tools as described above, extraction of anthers in a ceph flower is very delicate operation and must be done with extreme care , once your flower is free of anther that are just on the cusp of showing pollen so you know the receptor is going to be receptive in a few days later , so in a few days when the receptor appears ripe , plump and dewy looking ,you can apply freely the pollen from the other ceph flower pollen you have collated or can point harvest from a flower your wanting to cross with and use, this is the only way that you can insure that you hybrid is a true hybrid , if the anthers remain and the pollen get mixed you not 100% sure that it will be the hybrids your wanted . fortunately cephalotus flower all at the same time that makes it easier to do pollination and crosses.
any question just ask
thanks john
