    sarracenia storage

One indication that the rhizome is bad is when pitcher are wilting. I don't mean drying up but becoming soft and wilting. I know if caught early some people are cutting off healthy (white) part of the rhizome and throw away any part of the rhizome that is brown inside. a healthy rhizome is...

    sarracenia storage

What do you mean root problems? something must not be right because I never has a single problem with roots in more than 8 years. What were the conditions you had these problems? after a freeze? Maybe you are keeping them too wet during cold temperature? maybe they are freezing, unfreezing? not...

New (?) Carnivorous plant store in Quebec

They are selling sarracenias but don't say what it is. Probably purpurea. They are selling sarracenia seeds but they don't say what it is, looks like purpurea.

Is this soil ok for carnivorous plants?

Also look at some hydroponic stores in your area, they usually have perlite dirt cheap. If you buy that bag of perlite, it's expensive for just a tiny bag. I usually pay around 10$ for a huge bag or perlite.

    sarracenia storage

It's ok to leave them in peat only, no problem. As the others have said, avoid freezing. I keep mine in my garage and leave the heating at around 4C.

Starting Sarracenia Dormancy: How tolerant are they to a temperature drop?

It might delay dormancy if the temperature is very high during the day. I have mine in the greenhouse and leave both doors open so that the temperature is not higher than 24C or so. If you put your plants in the garage, it will be ok, no swing in temperature. If you leave them outside, it might...

Starting Sarracenia Dormancy: How tolerant are they to a temperature drop?

It's going to be expensive in electricity bill if you plan on leaving an heat pad at -20, and won't be effective I am afraid. Ottawa is cold in winter, and leaving an aquarium outside with an heat pad won't make much difference to prevent it from freezing. The other thing that can happen is if...

Starting Sarracenia Dormancy: How tolerant are they to a temperature drop?

The problem with doing a short dormancy is that they will not withstand very low temperature that way because they will not have plenty of time to prepare for a harsh winter. I am not sure how you intend to keep them this winter? outside? inside? if you put them for a few weeks outside and then...

    Sad Sarracenia

wow, you put 3% peroxide on the roots directly? you should dilute it with water. I don't remember exactly but I think it's one part peroxide 3 parts water? not sure. It's normal for them to have break in growth from time to time. Sometime they stop growing for a while and then put out a much...

Sarracenia alata inside or outside for the fall/winter?

It depends, for dormancy I use my heated garage and I keep the temperature around 5 C, and no light. They have been doing great for 8 years. Sometimes it's better inside for dormancy if the winter is too cold. It's skipping the dormancy and keeping the plants inside in warm temperature that is...

    Sarracenia camisole, Hurricane creek white

Sarracenias camisole is awesome this year. I did not expect this plant to become so big. I thought it was more like Jutatip soper or Judith hindle but it's nearly 2 feet high and huge pitchers. It's a beautiful sarracenia with huge lid extending far outside the mouth. With time the top become...

    The Sarracenia wrigleyana divition project.

LOL! you made me lough so hard. since I once brought a squirrel that we had tamed inside our house ( he was in my coat pocket) and saw the sheer explosion of panic that creature went through, jumping everywhere, attacking everything (and it was tamed) I can imagine hundred of them in Trump's...

    The Sarracenia wrigleyana divition project.

Be careful to say that in a public forum because it is illegal to shoot them. You might get in trouble if you write this. Everybody wants to shoot them but keep it for yourself :-)

    The Sarracenia wrigleyana divition project.

Same here, and if you remove one, 10 more come to take its place. How about putting chicken fence around your sarracenias? My neighbord did this for his veggies because of the squirrels. I never had a squirrel dig out a sarracenia, but they do cut off the flowers and leave them there on the...

    The Sarracenia wrigleyana divition project.

Oh, this is why we removed our bird feeders, they were attracting squirrels too much. My most precious sarracenias are in the greenhouse but they did not suffer from the constant heat waves we got this summer. I think it's probably the squirrels that killed them because we also got the very cold...
